My work is driven by a desire to better understand how the world functions. I examine the parameters of individual experience as well as the larger dynamics of systems integrating many individuals – and the intersection of the two. I seek to articulate similarities among systems from different scales and diverse contexts, examining microscopic electrochemical reactions, the processes within the body, and larger systems of architectural and urban environments. This pursuit has led me to integrate scientific methods. I often use the process electrolysis, in which the molecules of a fluid are separated by the introduction of low-level electricity. I've incorporated this process in the development of drawings, as well as in sculptures. The sense of perspective articulated in the drawings references the autonomous experience of the individual. The use of copper carbonate- and copper-based ink, obtained through the electrolysis in water and saltwater, references the greater systemic continuum that integrates sentient as well as non-sentient beings. I have been working with images derived from the facades of ‘plattenbau’ architecture (east-German affordable housing analogous to American housing projects) and interior views of assembly line manufacturing plants. I chose these formats because their formal characteristics are well suited for showing the sense of perspective, and because the inherent conditions of these environments represent a disparity between the needs of individuals and demands of the larger systems integrating the individuals. The sculptures usually contain water or saltwater, and integrate the process electrolysis. The forms have an architectural quality, and reference the sense of perspective like the drawings. The main materials are Plexiglas and other plastics and frequently found materials are also integrated. I periodically offer workshops that explore some of the practical possibilities associated with my work. These workshops have focused on sustainable energy processes, mostly low-tech systems that directly utilize solar heat. The workshops have developed as a third way that the underlying concepts of my work are expressed, directly engaging with accessible social systems.
